Having wanted to hear a full range and/or open baffle speaker for the first time, and currently not having much $ nor tools, space, or time for DIY, I bought these:
Custom Handmade Full Range Speakers Unique Open Baffle Design Audiophile | eBay
I'm hoping someone could explain the rationale behind the design of these speakers (if any). Can you predict how they will sound? After purchasing, then researching OB speakers here, I think I may have just wasted my money on these because they don't appear to be built to any of the conventional ways advised here (ie. large baffle). Please tell me I am wrong.
I'll measure their response once they arrive, and post it here.
Drivers used: Tang Band W5-1611SAF
Open baffle and full range seem interesting to me because they sound like they would be a lot like planars and electrostats in terms of speed, openness, and bass, but with a lower cost and ease of building.
Anyways, I'd appreciate any help and hope these are decent value. At worst I guess I could try building my own set later using these drivers.

My knee jerk reaction would be epay equals rip-off.
But, Tang Band makes, for the most part, good drivers. However, that is a $50 driver and you paid $200 for it and $10 worth of wood. I doubt it sucks, but I think you paid too much.

I see some pillows in the photo
Though the synthetic is not as good as natural wool fibers for absorbing the sound, try to put some acoustic damping in the back of the speaker.
If not satisfied, put lateral baffles to make it closed, make some holes and try 2 or 3 chamber reflex. Experiment. A triangular enclosure at the back of the driver is not a bad idea.

lol what a creation 😛
At least those Tang Bands are very good, they have one of the best Vocal reproduction 🙂

Yes, the driver itself is one of the "good" ones....I had a discussion here about this particular driver... I tend to think it's an excellent buy..
As for the enclosure..?? The first picture of it I saw...I'm thinking to myself "Ah ha a back-loaded horn, he's showing us what it looked like inside as he built it" Scrolling down the pictures.."What?" I think he may have been trying to confuse prospective buyers...those who have seen briefly the INSIDES of back-loaded horns.
He MAY have been trying to build such a horn, got frustrated, just oiled it up & wanted to just sell it off. Then again, the angles of this thing don't make sense....for a back-loaded horn.
Look up back-loaded horns to see what I'm talking about, OK?

Gotta love E-prey! The good news is the drivers are nice...hope they both work and measure the same....but the design of the OB is truly one of the funniest things I've ever seen...sorry...don't mean to laugh at your expense, but you have to hand it to the vendor for his sheer unmitigated gall!
Gotta love his quote" “One of the best-sounding speakers I've ever made. Eerie. That point-source stuff is pretty ” “One of the best-sounding speakers I've ever made. Eerie. That point-source stuff is pretty ”

Make holes in braces and add side panels to make closed or BR box. There is no sonic advantage in OB, only waste of efficiency.
Hi,
Its an appallingly bad "design" by a clueless muppet,
who doesn't mind lying through his teeth about the
alleged sound quality, which really will be next to nil.
The "design" is just pointlessly pseudo complicated garbage.
"Audio artwork" my butt, and at $200 a complete ripoff.
I'd would seriously complain via Paypal of misrepresentation
and not fit for purpose. There is nothing "awesome" about
poorly stained lumps of wood crudely screwed together.

C'mon Twister, that's nothing more than your opinion and should be stated as such. For many of us OB's offer certain sonic qualities and characteristics that are preferable to enclosed designs. But that's an opinion as well.
BTW loudspeakers are not efficient in any sense of the word. But, even if I were to take it that you meant OBs exhibit less sensitivity than enclosed designs, you'd be wrong for the most part...(horns excepted)
Simply slapping sides and a bottom on the OPs catastrophe ain't going to improve things one bit and probably, in fact, only serve to make it worse...
There are more than a few people here familiar with the OPs driver that should be able to give him some practical alternatives.

Hi,
Your simply wrong, not much is worse than the current arrangement.

Frankly the only thing worse is to have no enclosure whatsoever...Oh that's right, like those...........uh oh............but I digress.
This driver models great........buy yourself some one inch thick MDF at the local store, draw out a box, Seventeen and a quarter inches high, Fourteen inches deep, Eleven and half inches wide..........cut a hole out of the 17.25 X 11.5 panel, using the "sample" enclosure to trace out the size.
At the same hardware store get a foot & a half of 2 inch PVC pipe & wood glue & 2" screws...........................use the so-called "enclosure" you got & build a Birdhouse with it. Let me know precisely what the inner diameter of you PVC pipe is & I'll give you a length to cut it.

If you are implying that slapping sides on this will improve it, that's a stab in the dark at best and a waste of his time and materials, at worst. Yes, the current arrangement is dreadful, but upgrading the current design to something almost equally hodge-podge isn't the way to go here.

Now the OP has something to begin working with...
well, while not my personal favorite, the drivers aren't junk, but a Grade 8 woodshop student would get a failing grade on the joinery on these
WTF is the purpose of the short piece dangling from the rear of the top member?
WTF is the purpose of the short piece dangling from the rear of the top member?
What IS that piece hanging down? I have no idea........I believe he tried his hand at woodworking & failed. Maybe it was part of something else he was trying to make, quit halfway thru & thought........"Hey, let me put these drivers in it" I think it was an afterthought as the flanges of the driver overhangs the edges. Some might think it was an "Artistic impression" to have those extended flanges just hanging there..I think not..........It is quite crude isn't it?
We'll never know I guess.

Its not dangling, you're just looking at it upside down...
Hey, that's pretty funny.😀
