I have finally finished my Project MTMs. They are based off of the Definitive Technology 5.25" woofers and Seas H537 tweeters from the Parts Express Definitive Technology buyout. They are a ported design with an F3 of 50 Hz. The tweeters are offset 3/4" and the box is vented via twin 1.5" ports that are about 3.5" long (if I remember correctly--I'll have to check) and the entire box is lined with convoluted acoustic foam. The crossover is nothing fancy, just a 2nd-order Linkwitz-Riley at 2800 Hz, with a 5dB L-Pad on the tweeter.
The sound is a lot better than what I had before. I am exploring new dimensions in music with these speakers that I had to listen for with my other speakers. I listened to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones on these speakers and these really do a terrific job of bringing out the high production quality and great musicianship of the group. The Seas H537s are smooth and finely detailed, not strained like my old cone tweeters. The 5.25" midbasses have good midrange resolution. The bass is quick enough to keep up with Victor Wooten's intense technical skill. I'm sure there are better-sounding speakers out there but these really do it for me. I don't expect I'll get bitten by the upgrade bug for a while
Expect a full write-up in the next week or so.
