Good morning everyone!

I‘m about to build myself my first phono-stages:
The jfet phono pre and the mc-prepre, both boozhound lab. They will be powered by a power supply (boozhound as well)

I have, being myself „electronically challenged“, a silly questions:
1) is it possible (and somewhat reasonable) to feed both from the same power-supply?
And, 2.) does it make sense to feed it with a EI-transformator (instead of a toroidal one)? Or would the advantage of a EI be absorbed by the trade-off of having one powersupply for 2 active stages?

Many thanks!
Dave

I have PCbs for this LM317/337 based power supply AD797 Phono Stage Build and Help Desk Thread | Page 63 | Audiokarma Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums Its easy and cheap enough to build. It can be powered by AC wall wart or transformer. You can easily run 2 preamps with this. This is as quiet as batteries with added advantage of adjustable output.

Hey gigigirl and sachin!
Thanks for your opinions!
Since I already got the power-supply, I‘ll go that road first and look / listen what it gives.

I ordered a fine little shielded toroid to feed it (although some say that a EI-tranny was better) , and hopefully won‘t need batteries 🙂

I‘ll keep you updated, but it‘ll take some time...
Best
Dave

I agree with the others who say the Boozhound devices should best be SLA powered. IE. separate SLAs (or stacks of SLAs, for 24v) for each device.

But if you want to power them both from the one Boozhound PS then:
1. you have to make sure they both run on the same voltage, and
2. you need to isolate the 2nd device from the first. You do this by using a diode (if they both run at 24v) or resistor (if you need to drop 12v for the mc prepre) in series with the DC feed to the 2nd device, followed by a shunt electrolytic cap of a value 10uF per ma of current drawn by the 2nd device.

And, yes, using an EI transformer instead of a toroid, for the Boozhound PS should make it sound better (quieter).

A diode will provide little or no isolation in this situation. Maybe you are thinking of the diode sometimes used to isolate the initial stages of a power amp from the output stage? Different situation entirely.

You may well be correct, DF96. 🙂

I merely passed on what an electronically-knowledgable friend of mine (who designs amps for a living) told me when I asked him how I could power 3x small current-draw devices from a single 12v Sbooster PS.
