Poor man's 604

While I would love a pair of 604, or EV, University or other vintage coax, It's not in the wallet any time soon. Are the Eminence any good? Looking at 12 or 15 inch with threaded center pole for Eminence comp driver? Anyone try them?

Looks like a KL3015CX-8/PSD:2013S-8/1.5-1.6 kHz XO could make some serious noise and the price is right, though will be pretty far removed from the later 604's high SQ, but a PSD:2002-8/1.2 kHz XO, while still a pretty crude combo will shift it back towards the earlier true multicell horn's performance, so would be my preference, especially if SET tube driven.

I used to own 604-8G's. I tried open baffle, 612C cabs, and 620 cabs for many years in a 16'x20' room, front wall is the short side. They are good. To me, the 414A or 414Z are better in sound quality. The 604s are ahead as far as how low it can go down (understandably so as it is 15" compared to 12" 414's) but it does not have the magic midrange to me than the 414's. I sold my 604's.
Of course, in my experience only and with my equipment.
Last time I checked, 414's are still available and affordable. You might want to consider it.

I used P Audio coaxials when I wanted a poor man's 604.

I picked a driver that looked like it played nicely around the crossover point - and it did. I built the (fairly simple) passive crossover by ear, and when I later got measuring gear, and an active crossover, had a hard time improving upon it.

I believe that's only possible (particularly for a novice) if you get a driver that is well-behaved, with lots of overlap at the crossover point.

For what it is worth, these are what I got (CXHB), and the dodgy little FR plots shown in the spec sheet turned out to be pretty accurate.

I would have had more of a struggle with a driver like the BETA-12CX, because the woofer has a big spike just above the crossover point.

EDIT: I'm not suggesting you seek out these exact drivers. Just saying that something with a similar amount of overlap between drivers will make it easy to get a good, flat response.

I say :

I have not been able to find 12 or 15 inch coaxial speakers on the Eminence website .... (understood as a concentric mounting of the tweeter in the center of the cone of the mid.twoofer .....)

Usable Frequency Range : 57 Hz - 4.6 kHz

Well, it is not what I consider a "full" coax, but it is what the OP is looking for ...
😀

In the US, this site seems to have some good sale items, e.g.

P Audio SN6-150CX Co-Ax Speaker

Same price as the Eminence, and the HF part is included.

These look like a fairly easy 2kHz crossover would work. They'd be best paired with a sub.

The site has cheap P.Audio 12" and 15" coaxials as well, but their LF output won't be much better, and their crossover regions look messier, so I wouldn't go there; the smaller drivers + a subwoofer seem like a safer bet.

That's a fabulous looking 6CX motor strength and response wise. I recently got a 10cx by Eminence but would guess the "horn" transition may not be so smooth as the voice coil is much larger than the tube/horn. I think it has a 109oz magnet (?)

The CD screws into the back of the magnet. The woofer apparently has a built-in horn with a ~transparent dust cap.

As for any attempt at a physical time alignment, the HF needs to be behind the woofer's motor.

You realize the tweeter is sold separately, and that coax’s often use a mid bass for the low end?

Yes, I just wanted to know which model is to screw after removing the dust cover.
I only have experience with vintage lines, Tannoy as absolute reference and I still have my JBL LE14 C, of course they were for other power handling, I would not recommend them to the OP ...
Sorry for the intrusion, I won't bother you anymore with my silly questions.

By motor strength, do you mean low Qes?

They look pretty good, too. I saw them mentioned in a thread here on DIY audio suggesting that they are used in these $8500 a pair speakers - and they sure do look alike.

Cheap and decent 12” coax

Trenner & Friedl Osiris loudspeaker Page 2 | Stereophile.com

The Osiris speakers appear to use a passive crossover with about 7 parts.

Instead of using a sub, they sacrifice a bit of efficiency to get bass extension to 50Hz.

The measurements page of the review makes the speaker seem OK but not $8500 good.

Most the problems noted were attributed to implementation, not the driver (panel resonances, crossover issues).

...so I think it would be possible to make a $500 DIY build (with better box & bracing + using a cheap DSP rather than an expensive passive crossover) that would measure better.
