i was just doing some general looking around on the net tonight, and i found a type of tweeter i thought was cool, the plasma tweeter. basically, it creates a plasma flame, which is controlled via a circuit board, and creates sound waves... looked DAMN cool, and a few companies (very very very very high end) use them in their speakers. it has a few upsides, and some major downsides too.
the benefit, is supposedly it is perfect... it can reproduce sounds as good as your system can give it. since it is a plasma arc producing sound, it can do it quite well, if not as perfect as it can be. and, it is really cool. a little flame producing sound? neat.
the downsides are many. its highest efficiency is 85dB, but can be remedied by horns (with loss of accuracy i assume...), and, its a flame, so improperly done, can set fires (plasma is hot). and it creates a lot of RF and radiates ozone. hehe.
just wondered if anyone had come across this before. supposedly, with a few spare parts, it can be made quite easily. some of you people with too much time, and too many spare parts should try it. there is nothing exotic that is needed to build it.
