Pioneer PD-M601 not spinning

I am doing some spring cleaning, so I am going through all of the unfixed equipment I have and deciding what to junk, and what to fix.

I found a Pioneer PD-M601 6 disc changer that will not spin any CD I try in it. I checked the laser and it does light, cleaned connectors and checked for bad solder joints, nothing.

The player just keeps flipping through each section like there is no disk there until it gets to the end and just says "no disk".

What would the consequences be if I replace the motor?

Any suggestions?

The lase needs to light up, move up-down AND ACTUALY have strong enough laser output to detect the CD. After that, the motor will start spinning.

You'll need to check the laser output by measuring reflected amount of laser light gathered by photo diodes. You'll need the service manual, or there might be points labelled on the PCB - test points.

Sometimes the DC motor (spindle motor) collector gets very dirty and conductive - the rotor can not generate the starting torque to start spinning the CD. Solution is to take the spindle motor out and inject some methylated spirits to wash the grease. I've tried this many times when other gurus couldn't fix the "no-spinning” issues... trivial, basic and logical… and 20-30min fix. Some very high end transports (that “starve” the spindle motor to get smooth rotation) suffer from this a lot!

Boky

Simpler & very, very effective motor cure is to simply give a quick spray of silicone-based spray lub(electrically safe type) right into the slots in the bottom(facing up) of the platter motor. This cures them every time & they never seem to fail again after this treatment. The only other common fault is, of course, the lens falling out of the laser, which is simply a matter of very carefully regluing back into the actuator.

some luck

Hello again, I pulled the motor assembly out and desoldered the motor. I then sprayed contact cleaner into the motor and gave it a few boosts with a 9V battery.

When I put it back in the player, for the first time it actually spun the disk but did not play it. After taking the disk out and putting it back in again it did nothing again. 🙁

What can I try next guys, that does not require the use of a service manual?
