Pioneer A400 amp servicing in UK

Hello, can anyone recommend an engineer to service a Pioneer A400 amplifier in Surrey, UK? The amp drops the left channel at low volumes like when I listen to TV at night, the volume dial crackles. Also, one or two of the input channels don't work as well as the others with intermittent crackling/static noticeable and drop in volume level. Many thanks. James

have you tried cleaning the volume control pot with contact cleaner?

Hi jaycee,

No, but if this is something simple I can try myself I might give it a go (baring in mind I'm someone who's never wielded a soldering iron let alone anything more complicated). If the only tools required are screw drivers and common sense I may be willing to try this. From a quick google looks like contact cleaner is stuff in a can, how much of this good stuff do I spray and were exactly?

It might be more efficient to get another of the evil bay, they seem to go for £80-90+postage or a bit less if local & pick up only.
Asuming it doesn't need unobtanium parts I could fix it up, I'm in Guildford.

Hi EssB,

Thanks very much for your reply, I'm located near Guildford myself. I may try cleaning the volume pot myself if someone can advise exactly what I need to do, otherwise how much would you charge to service the amp, and could upgrades be incorporated?

Not sure about acquiring another A400 on evil Bay... I like my one but if I were to buy another amp on eBay would be inclined to try something else, more of an upgrade like the Audiolab 8000A or even better the 8000S with remote control for volume adjustments from the sofa. Something robust with a remote volume control would be a worthwhile investment. I'd still like to get my own A400 in top condition, it only has a couple of minor issues but dropping the left channel at low volumes is the most pressing now that I'm using it for TV sound. If this can be sorted out I'd be happy enough, at least for the time being before the tweeking bug takes over :D

Pioneer A400 amp repair in UK

I'm having the same issue as I described above, with the volume dropping out when the dial is set at a low level around 8 o'clock, where I want it to be and probably where the contact has become worn out. I don't think cleaning the pot is sufficient, I think I need to replace the volume control.

I believe there is a non-original replacement part that is compatible, I don't mind losing the split control on the volume dial. Does anyone know how expensive it would be to do this, for the part and labour. It's not something I'd be able to do myself, I don't even have a soldering iron.

Thanks...

Hello! Can anyone recommend someone in Surrey to replace the volume pot/ control on a Pioneer A400 amp and how much would this cost for parts and labour? I know it would need to be a non-original part without the balance function and that’s okay. Thanks for any suggestions.
