Philips CDM-1 MKll spindle motor strange behavior.

Hello everybody,
My player has Philips CDM -1 MKll transport. All the sudden the spindle motor start rotating counterclockwise since I inserted CD. I removed the laser head and checked it in another player and laser head is working fine. What could be an issue ?
Thanks.

Hello, I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but I think I have a related issue. I have an issue where the disc turns, at first with short quarter turns and sometimes back and forth, but then eventually spins fully, slowing but surely gathering speed, and never reading the TOC. I am pretty fresh with DIY audio but I picked up a great find and would love to fix its cd player. That being said, I don’t even know the correct direction that discs should spin lol. After reading some other posts I’ve gathered that If the disc is spinning at all, then the laser/lens is achieving focus?? Also, confusing for me is that after a minute of not reading the toc, when I eject the disc, it won’t eject unless I press the eject button a few times. And further confusing me, is that sometimes when I eject the disc, it begins to spin faster, before the tray comes open, often resulting in the cd still spinning in place as the tray opens up. But it seems to me that because its able to spin faster, that it never really gets to full speed while trying to read the TOC? And the fact that its spinning quickly, albeit, not at the correct time, suggests to me that the spindle motor is still opportating correctly. I have the service manual and I’m considering getting an oscilloscope, but if anyone has any thoughts that can help me diagnose my issue I would be very appreciative. Btw, I’m working with a Panasonic/technics SL-CH9.

Hi, I'm not a CD player guy but there are some around here. If you have the service manual you might post it.

Also, if you are serious about working on audio devices, you need a scope. Minimum 100Mhz bandwidth, 2-channels. Nowadays they are cheap. Learning how to use it is very important too. The "auto" button will only work for simple cases. Read the manual and master the instrument, should be the goal. Hope a CD player guy wonders by and offers a few words of wisdom for you regarding the symptoms you are seeing. 🙂

Thanks Markw4 for the reply! Let’s just say that I am becoming more and more serious about audio devices. I gained a little confidence after fixing some simple issues with a disc changer and a couple Walkmans and then after designing and building a crossover and assembling components in a nice sounding speaker cabinet. I hear you on getting the right tools for the job. I will kindly take your suggestions! And yes, I do hope a cd guy comes around so to maybe point me in the right direction.
