How many db of attenuation do i actually need with a preamp (passive).
If I want to use a transformer, tx-102, sowter (any others I should look at ??)

Is there a formula to work it out.

My amp is .5 volt input sensitivity and I run it directly from a cd player with a pot between now.

Set the pot to "normal" listening level. Disconnect the player & amp. Measure resistance on both sides of the wiper, calculate their ratio, convert to dB.
