Pacing Speakers drivers for best performance

Hi all. Just looking for some tips/advice. I have just started building speaker boxes and am somewhat constrained as the drivers are in retrofitted boxes that I am re-purposing for speakers. All inner walls braced with 9mm MDF.

Anyway I have two Visaton FR 7 - 4ohm - 5watt (rms) speakers driven by a Tiny Shine 8watt Bluetooth Amplifier.

The sound is very impressive for the setup and I am generally pretty happy. Being so small these speakers don't pump out a ton of bass and would be nice of there was a touch more because the mids and highs are pretty clear an defined.

The drivers are about 17cm apart centre to centre and the box internal dimensions are about 9 x 9 x 35 cm. This is laid out like a centre speaker arrangement with the drivers side by side.

So to the question is (generally and specifically) is there an optimum way to place drivers in this type of configuration for best sound?? I found putting them up the side sounded a bit better. Are they too far apart maybe? I know they say for two way systems the tweeter and mid/woofer should be no more than 2 inches apart so wonder if something applies in this case as well?

Also wondering if a simple port would help? Though the constrains of my box may make it a touch difficult. Mounting a passive driver maybe?

Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This is my first try at this and now that the project is complete I am thoroughly hooked!

Apologies for the long post but thought it best to get as much info out. Thanks in advance!

Two and a half inch speakers? Even two of them won't go boom. (They would pump bass in a horn 8 feet across and 12 feet long.) (Or sealed to your ear.)

Be happy; and look for deals on 6x9, 8", and larger air-movers.

.....it can be done at that size.

The ND65 have 3X the mass, 3dB less midband output, 3X the displacement, 3X the magnet, and 1/4 the Qt, at 4X the price. If you take advantage of the 3X power rating (which may not apply at deep bass) it plays barely louder than the FR7, with an added octave+ of lower extension.

Around $20, Pyramid W64 ($14) will thump good. Goldwood GW-8003/8 may be a better fit for the low-low sensitivity of those 2-inchers, though $27 seems high, and it wants a big box (or a hole in a door).

Very interesting. Its those details that I am not as familiar with so some good insights. As I said I am new and learning alot of this. I think I will buy 1 Dayton ND65 just to see what it sounds like.

As I said the performance of those Visatons seem really good for the money/size so I am pretty happy. My box has a few gaps I'm sure so I might just make sure seal it up nice and tight and see what difference that makes.

I will check out some of your other suggestions so thanks again for that. Appreciate your input.
