One 12" or two 8" drivers on a budget?

With a budget of about £80 just for the driver which would you go for?

I want good quality but good bass, balanced really.

1 good quality 12". In my opinion, the quality of a subwoofer is 90% enclosure. Build that right and you can make just about anything sound good.

It's always better to buy one high quality linear low distortion driver, than to buy two poor ones for the same money 🙂 Box design plays a huge part but driver quality really does have an influence too.

12" is the most competitive size of sub... on a budget like yours a single 12" makes the most sense.

Box design is decided upon after knowing what type of system it is to be used with. i.e. 3 or 4 way system. active or passive. large or compact. acuracy or sheer pressure. etc etc.

I agree with planet10 that for you money 12" drivers offer all round value, and in the right enclosure can hit lower and harder than 18,s.

Try coupled cavity enclosures for example using a driver with a strong motor assembly. Fane are awesome drivers as are Precision devices but can be pricey new. for 80 quid you should be able to get a v.good 12 driver and try modelling a few using winisd
