Newbie question, What is this for?

Hello all.

I've had these speakers for a while and I always wondered what these aluminum bars(looks like coolers?) over the mid-range speakers are for?
Directing the sound? Or doen't they have a function?
Should I get rid of them?

Hello Christian,

These nice thingies perform as dispersion system, so they are UNdirecting the sound. Some people believe that it helps to give more realistic soundstage.

To get rid or not to get rid... Try to listen both with abd without them and decide. I personally don't like them....

These fins were used by JBL because of the brightness of the tweeters, or so I have been told. Another reason could be because of the depth of the horn that the drivers could be too fast and the directional fins are there to keep a better phase transition.

Short word for it: Accustic lens! Concave if we talk glass lens.

As mentioned above horns have rather narrow radiation angle (by nature). This is a way to get a wider listening angle.
