If you read the new Popular Science Mag you will see these. They are .61" and are 1080 resolution. They paragraph said that these will make projection TVs cheaper, but I wonder what the cost of 3 of these would be to a DIYer, and if you could do anything with them (ie. proprietary hardware) Just wanted to throw that out there. It would be great if we could use those instead of the large and single LCDs.

I saw an ad for a 1200 lumen 1080 Sony projector at staples for $599...and it was tiny.

pretty soon there will be no point in building our own because an entire projector will soon cost the price of a lilliput, a light, and a lense.:bawling:

that upsets me because I will feel less special and proud of what I have done. no one will appretiate the work when the box is 3' long and 1.5' wide....when for $399(in the near future) you can buy an HD projector thats 3" by 15" by 10"

I find that hard to believe. even 720p projectors are outrageously expensive. it couldn't have been true 1080, perhaps some kind of delusional, i.e. can input 1080 signal and will convert to vga or svga. The New sony projector that uses the new SXRD panels is listed @ $9,999 on their sonystyle website. I don't see that price coming down to $399 anytime soon. The cheapest 720p projector at the site is listed over $3K and lists a contrast ratio of up to 6000:1!! I'm sure these prices are inflated but you get the idea. now svga and maybe even some xga projectors may be a different story though before too long.

Even if the commerical projector costs only $50, after you have to buy one of those $500 replacement bulbs, it's no longer cheap. It's like buying printers. Yeah, they cost $50, but the ink costs $60 and you have to replace the ink often (same as the bulbs).

2000 hours for a bulb at $300 - $500 a pop? No thanks. I'll use my 20,000 hour bulb that costs $35.
