Would an SDX7 work in a BIB side mounted with a 4 or 5 inch in normal position or am I asking for trouble? The other idea is to forget the BIBs and build changs with 4.5" drivers. Then put the shadow cabinet in the center between the speakers with two SDX7s. There are two many options right now. I feel I can't make a decision.
Acoustically, this is no different than putting an open back tweeter in a bass cab, i.e. the strong bass wave action will modulate the tweeter to a fare thee well, driving it into deep distortion, only worse due to the BIB's high gain TL pipe action, so I figure it will drive the 'FR' driver to destruction in short order if the volume is high and/or the signal has some high gain LF.
Only one way to know for sure though as each driver combo will have its own low distortion limit, but if it were me I'd put the 'FR' driver on a separate OB or in a small sealed cab attached to the BIB.
Yeah, during my most active DIY speaker building 'career', there wasn't much tech info or driver choices available, so mass quantities of proofs-of-concept had to be cobbled together/crudely measured to get enough data to develop some worthwhile rules-of-thumb, though those folks with the higher math skills/education could skip much of this by working through it mathematically same as the pioneers of audio did.
