Known as a Geiger Mueller tube.
Similar, but different:
Electronic Goldmine - Glass Type 5980 Geiger Mueller Tube
Apply a large voltage (300 to 1000 volts) across the tube through a large resistor (megohms). Couple the tube to an audio amp or counting device through a capacitor (wiring similar to an electret mic) and listen to, or count the discharge as a radioactive particle passes through the tube.

If it is a Geiger-Mueller tube then I suppose you could include it in a preamp to simulate the almost random clocks and pops from LP.
That is a fantastic idea, DF96. Call it the Nostalginator. Slap a random 12xx7 and some resistors in there and ship it with a pair of really tight jeans. Pairs well with IPA.
