My first TL is alive!! (long post)

Hey all, just wanted to drop a line and say thanks to all who helped me on my way of understanding TL design (an on going learning curve as I am finding out). Well, I must say that I am hooked on Transmission Line Enlcosures. For fun, I decided to build a non-tapperd "straight pipe" design out of some 10.5" Sono Tube.

The driver I used is designed for Car Audio use (Alpine SWS-1040D). Fs of around 34Hz with a total Q of around 0.6 and a line stuffing of about 1/8th pound per cubic foot (didn't like the .5 lbs sound) densly stuffed. Power wise, only about 100-150 watts and crossed over (using active network) between 60-75 (still playing with freq.).

I powered her up last night and started to fill the line with 100% Polyester (what I had kicking around). For anyone who has ever never done this before, the effects are very dramatic...too much or too little and the line will surely tell you :>)

Once I got it close to what I liked (tunning) I sat and started to listen...the results...simply amasing. Very low...very cool. But what really got me is the fact of where I'm tunning it. Basically "open air" on top of a work bench in a very large room 3700 sqft. You guys should have heard it...shaking the rafters/steel garage door...non bolted down tools etc...he he he. I can't wait to hear what it's going to sound like in my listening room!

Again, the output and extention is very very nice...my first TL and I love it. The music warms up so much when using it!

Thanks to all who helped!

the lines can be pretty blurred between a ported, a TL, and a baffle enclosure, hunh? I was imagining a 2 foot diameter baffle with a small driver and some sonotube to extend the bafle back some. Would have looked just like that but shorter and fatter and a smaller driver !

Took her home last night!!!

I have to say it....OH MY GOD! I love this thing, got it home last night and plugged it in. Played with the tunning on my X-over, gain and room placement for a few minutes and bam...never have I been so impressed with a design so fast. By playing with it some more, it blended into my mains so smoothly. It's only a 10" with maybe 150 Watts but its almost way too much for my room...and it's around 12' by 20ish'. The low end is very very nice!!

I urge any of you that have been thinking about building a TL, build it, if it works correctly you will not be disapointed.

My 2 Cents

Sure, just have to bring home my digital camera. But in the meen time, all I have done to connect the end plates to the tube is simply screwed them together. I measured the outer diam. of the tube, transfered the measurements to the end plate and cut the hole. Attatching the end was easy, slid the tube into the cut out of the end plate and screwed (from the inside of the tube to the end plate) it all together. I did add some silicone around the connections (end plate/tube) to seal it better.

Hope this helps

Yes, that's better 🙂

Lesse... most amps produce voltage gain, not convert voltage linearly to power. (As a SWAG, power goes up with the *square* of the voltage. Our ears also have a logarithmic response, so this also makes sense.) So at 5V, you get 150W. Half voltage (2.5V in) and you get quarter power, only ~38W.
My calculations show you're running about 14W max., which sounds much more reasonable, and makes sense to me too. 🙂

Tim (unwraveling the mystery of room-filling 1W SET amps 😉 )
