Motus woofers and mids - any good?

I came across these seemingly obscure drivers but could find very little about them. They look to be well engineered but outer beauty can be deceptive.

Anyone try these? How do they compare with other higher end cone drivers?

These are NOS drivers offered for sale in US 48 only after the company folded.

Note the underhung geometry (rising/higher H3 in midrange), a relatively small spider and even number of convolutions in the spider (asymmetric KMS(x)) limiting it's performance.

Polished and shaped top and bottom plate gives shiny and aerodynamic appearance, which consumers conflate with "build quality", when in fact should be referred to as "finish quality"

If they had focused on engineering fundamentals instead of high end conventions, the price could have been lower but the performance higher, which may have allowed them to sell more units and survived this tough business...

Vance is less critical than that. According to him its minor.

Vance is rarely critical. However, he should also practice critical thinking more often.

For starters, he needs to use the correct microphone for the job... he uses a electret condenser microphone which has THD at 123dB/126dB
and then proceeds to blast them at up to 120dB, so half the distortion he measures is in fact due to the microphone being exposed to too high and SPL.

He had been using the same microphone up until ?October 2020) but at some point acquires a different microphone for polar measurements up to 20KHz. But this newer microphone is in fact capable of higher SPL handling (and thus lower self distortion, and may be better suited for being subject to

One must be able to admit one is wrong, and willing to break conventions (before one can move on...

Repeated calls to change his microphone/methodology seems to fall upon woollen ears...

Well it's really not fair on the manufacturers sending in their products for review, is it?

The following month he blasts the electret microphone with in excess of 126dB:

It's not exactly clear which model mic he's using- the one that that has THD at 123dB, or 126dB... but regardless, it gets to a cracking ~129dB.
Is it any wonder the H2 looks like that (i.e. red H2 curve follows a similar shape to the fundamental, and over 4% at 2.x KHz)?

Lars and I have made requests for him to look at his measurement chain. Hopefully Steve Mowry can change his mind..

I can't even change my own wife's mind... so I understand the difficulties of these things...

David, I do believe that is the source of the renewed interested in these drivers, relevant for people in the US48.

I do wonder if it would be interesting to apply cone modifications to particular drivers with better designed motors and suspensions , to smooth out the frequency response/reduce the distortion, rather than polish top/bottom plates, which will make no difference to performance, but do gives impressions of "high quality"

Some manufacturers offer replaceable cones, in case you stuff up want to try different modifications

I helped someone do a design with the 5" a few years ago (10?), and it was a very clean design.
I would recommend a smaller box when able as they can unload easier than some others, and these underhung drivers tend to not be as graceful when exceeding xmax. The frames are really thin, and I have heard of some of them cracking under less than stellar treatment.
