Massive Focal loaded cabinets. Worth saving??

Hi guys,

today I was given what look like kit-built speakers, loaded with Focal bass (10N511) & mid (7N313) drivers, along with a Vifa D26TG tweeter in the centre. Below is a photo to give you an idea. The cabs are an odd hexagon shape when you look from the top, are white in colour and have foam treatment around the mid & treble units. The bass is ported and it's volume takes up most of the cab. They are bi-ampable with a complex X-over for mid & treble and the bass unit has a big LPF board before it.

I've googled and not found any kits that look like this. I need to research the date codes on the drivers to try and see how old they are. They originated from Denmark apparently. Unfortunately they were in storage for the past few years and a water leak has destroyed the base of one of the cabinets. Also the two bass drivers are damaged. One is open-circuit and the other has a damaged surround :-(. Such a shame! What I am wondering is if the mid and treble units are worth saving and using for a new build, or I could add new bass drivers??? I think the 7N313 will work down to 40Hz so could make a nice set of bookshelf's from them...

Just thought I'd ask here and see if they are even worth any effort at all. Thanks! 😀

Why not? It's free, and it looks decent enough.

It can be a platform for your experiments. Or save the parts for future projects once you get tired.

Woofers can be repaired. Cost not much if the problem is minor. But if the VC can't be saved, than it'd cost much more.

(As a last case) Give a call to Falcon for NOS. They had a kit Focal 533 with the same drivers Focal 10N511 of your speaker.

Your design makes me think of the classics ELIPSON and by no other reason here they are.

It would be a pita trashing such a good concept, crossovers and drivers done by the masters themselves. Taking in consideration that's the work of genius you have in hands...
Have fun... "à la française", I would say!

Thanks for the replies guys 🙂. I have just called Falcon (followed by a detailed email) and they are gonna check their stock for me. The guy said that they might have re-cone kits still in stock, and if so these big things shall hopefully sing again 🙂. They're singing right now but with no bass units and my Heathkits are filling in the bottom end 😛.

The mid drivers seem very directional! Is that due to the metal centric cone? I have also asked Jerry in Falcon whether he has any data on the kits themselves and crossover freq's etc.

Inductor, I don't think these are the ELIPSON design. These have a triangular shape from above but with the corners cut off, ending up in a six-sided cabinet. They are strongly reenforced inside and well-built.

Woofers can be repaired. Cost not much if the problem is minor. But if the VC can't be saved, than it'd cost much more.

Hmm I think these are past it though CLS :-/. On one the surround is perished and cracked and has lifted completely from the basket, whereas the other is physically ok but has a burnt-out VC...

So! Any more ideas on exactly what these cabinets are? Or maybe they are somebody's own creation! One of a kind 🙂. I really would love some data on the X-overs. They seem to be unmarked, although I will remove them to see if there are any details in the copper etching...
