Marantz CD-46... How to start?

Hi folks,
I'm very new to this modding thingy.... So happen that I managed to salvage a Marantz CD-46 and got it working (replaced the optical pick-up). This first step kind of spurs me on to do "more"... 🙂 Thus, wondering if anyone here has experience with the above? What are the stuff that I can do? Did not managed to find much on the web.. most are for CD63... 🙁 Thanks!

hey poozebear
i too also got a Marantz CD-46, and get ready... there aint much info out there. hjelm was nice enough to find me the schematic/service manual and instruction manual at http://www.schaltungsdienst.de
they are charging 9.90Euro and 9.90Euro postage here to Australia. I havent got around to ordering it, but it would be essential before tinkering i believe.

i reckon:
first step is to remove muting transistors on the output
second step is to upgrade the power supply
third step is to install a spdif out, pulse transformer, reclocking etc
fourth step is to install high precision clock
fifth step is to build a seperate dac, CS8412+TDA1543 or what you prefer

and i reckon thatd be a good start for an introduction to cd-modding.
good luck

Hey poozebear

let me know if you find the schematic within the next week or two.
if you dont i will buy the schematic and share it with you, even though it will end up costing me $70AU 😡

being that the CD-46 was manufactured in singapore you may have more luck!

thanks

Hi PHS,
No worries... let's see if my fren (who worked in Philips) can give us any good news.... just wrote to her for the CD-46.... wrote to her for the Philips CD940... not very successful... coz too old... 🙂 Keep your fingers crossed....

Anyway, I just replaced some of the caps on the 46.... the outcome is pretty heartening... the soundstage actually opens up... tonality is pretty good too.... just fixed up the IEC for convenience... hate to lug along the power cable everytime I carry that fellow around... but the PCB is really quite filmsy.... replaced 4 caps and lifted 2 tracks!

Well... that's all for now... hope to bring you good news soon.. 🙂

Hi PHS,
Bad news.... my friend is not able to get it... apparently, it is so old that they no longer keep it in their archives! :bawling:

Anyway, find that the most significant change came from the caps at the output... the rest are rather subtle... perhaps changing the power supply will bring it to the next level... btw, as introduced by a fellow forumer, i'm using the opa2134 to replace the njc4560D.... u may want to try AD826 too... a reviewer gave it rave reviews! 🙂

That's all for now... catch up with you soon!

Cheers!

CD-46

Hi,
I have the schematic. 3-4 pages of A2 size. Give me some days and I will post here.

I had mod CD-46 years ago. The 46 don't use Digital filter with TDA1545, so it's non-oversampling since born. You can try mod the originally pure analog output first, then power supply to get there best. My last mod is TDA1541A DAC built-in with new analog output. You can directly connect I2S from PCB to 1541's or 1543's, if you need. Add reclock later is fine too. Inside the 46 have lot of space. You can play everthing there.

I'll be back.
Art.
