These cheap clip leads (can't remember if they were dollar store or surplus store) are magnetic!. They have a resistance of about an ohm. If they came from the local surplus outlet in a pack of 10 or 20, they are likely SE Brand.

I usually buy several 10 packs at the Dayton hamfest each year. I look for the bigger ones with thicker wire. Upon opening I test each lead by briefly shorting out the heater terminals on one of my bench supplies. Two are three in each pack either are open, or fail this test since the wires are not soldered, just crimped, sometimes the wires are not well striped. Your test reveals why they will not take solder, the wire is probably made out of recycled Toyotas!
OK for low current use. I expect you will find the wire is just a few strands.

I prefer to buy them loose, without wire and usually fit (crimp and solder) my own silicone sheathed wire.
I've also recently bought some goldplated croc clips from a local outlet but these are also magnetic.
