Mag 14" Questions

I am new to this diy video and am exploring different options. I was wondering if any one has any pictures of their ohp setup with a Mag 14" lcd (the one from bestbuy) and some results. I want to make one using that lcd and an ohp, but wanted to see if someone had already done it successufully w/ an ohp, rather than a custom enclosure, so i could model mine like it when i actually do it. Pictures PLEASE!!

Also, I have read unclear conflicting viewpoints, but wanted to know if anyone knew whether or not this would be an adequate setup to be able to play xbox on (i wasn't sure about the refresh rate since it was rated at 50ms i think)

Thanks,
Jay

i am going to be building an enclosure for my mag 14", but would like to get my hands on an ohp to test it in the meantime.

from what i've read in the forums, i don't think 50ms is gonna work well for xbox. mine is primarily gonna be for dvd's.

that lcd was so easy to strip it was almost scary. only thing i'd say to be careful of is not to over-flex the ribbon across the top of the panel itself.

oh, yeah... one thing to watch for. when i was separating the aluminum frame from around the panel, there's a TINY screw by the top corner. i didn't even see it until i almost bent the s#!t out of the frame.

Dude, Vudu, I wish you'd get some pictures of this thing posted!

Did you get a chance to check it out before you ripped it? what did you think of it? I've seen it running there at BB, but compared to the other LCD's next to it, I wasn't really impressed. I'm hoping it does better for projection since it's so attractively priced.

I've been thinking about just going and getting one and waiting for you to get something going. If you were near me, I'd say bring it over and slap it on my OHP. You anywhere near Kansas City?

i only had it hooked up long enough to make sure it was working. the one thing i noticed both at the store and at home is that it only really looks decent from directly in front. it washes out badly at more than about15 - 30 deg from center. fortunately, that won't be an issue from the projection standpoint (will it?)

as for being near KC, only on a global / cosmic scale 🙂, i'm down here between orlando and daytona beach (yeah, sux to be me i know) 🙂

as for getting it put together and pics posted, i'm sorry to say that it's gonna be on hold for a while. i'm having surgery on my wrist tomorrow and my hand is gonna be in a cast for 4 - 6 weeks, so i figure it'll be at least a week before i can hold a screwdriver again 😀

So I was standing in Best Buy last nite.. money in hand, ready to buy a Mag LCD. But I was noticing that the color on this thing just wasn't anywhere near the color on all the other LCD's on the shelf. There were probably 10 LCD's there ranging from 15" to 19" and all of them showing the same screen.

The mag LCD just didn't look like any of them. The color on it looked super washed out, and not nearly as bright. The color on all the other LCD's was really nice.

I asked the guy working there and he said that it was just a difference in the LCD... he said that that's how it was fresh out of the box.

This wasn't just like a slight difference either. I've made a little file to show the kind of difference I'm talking about. When I made this, I tried to intentionally not go overboard, so in reality, it may not even be as strong a difference as what I was seeing.

Has anyone else looked at this LCD and compared it to others? Is it just this one that I was looking at that looked so horrible?

Actually, I did mess with contrast and such. It has all sorts of settings. But I had my wife and 7 mo old daughter with me, and I had already spent 30 minutes picking out a new universal remote, so they were getting a little antsy. I didn't get to play as much as I wanted to.

I did notice though that the other Mag LCD they had on the shelf (either 17" or 19") didn't seem to be so bad. it was more in line with the others. But it was also much more in line price wise as the others.

I was thinking of buying one of those too when I first started to build my projector but when I saw the picture quality I was disappointed. I tried to play with the settings in the store but it did not help the image much. The sales guy told me it only had 250:1 contrast ratio so I just said forget it. I did not play with it too long so you may be able to tweak it a little bit more. Overall I did not like it so I went with the cmv 1512 instead. One thing I noticed though is compared to the other displays it was not as bright even with brightness turned up all the way. I think it has a weak backlight so maybe that is why the colors don’t jump out at you. I guess the only way to know for sure is for some one to give it a try.

Well,I just got mine home and it seems like the picture above is indeed correct. The colors seem washed out,but it also looks like it might be a product of the backlight. And from the factory it comes defalt set as warm color temp, and I prefer cool.It seemed to help it a little.

Several have already answered, but I will kick in as well. I saw the mag in the same setting at best buy. It looked like crap against the rest of the monitors.

Colors were very washed out. I don't know if this can be blamed on setup unless there isn't anyone at any best buy store that knows how to set up a monitor ........ (well, maybe that could be the case 😱 )

I didn't care much for the NEC either, but maybe it was just that awful glaring glossy front it had ack!!
