Hey, everybody. I'm looking for a good electret microphone. I have some EM273s, but their disadvantage is that they are omnidirectional. I'm looking for a directional mic. Can anyone tell me what brand of microphone to choose? Maybe you know manufacturers in Europe? Thanks
Been a long time since I've bought microphones, but I found the Audio Technica Pro 37 cardioid electret microphone to work well for a wide variety of instruments, at a decent price for good sound.
It's small size makes it convenient for getting in and around drums.
It's proximity effect boosts at much lower frequency than most dynamic mics, so close miking drums requires less EQ to sound "huge", while it has fairly flat response (other than the 5-10kHz "presence peak")when at a distance of 12" or more.
Has a maximum sound pressure of 141dB, which can be exceeded if placed in a kick drum hole, but have not heard them clip on any other instrument.

I bought a no-name cardioid lapel mike with a clip for the shirt collar from e-bay for $50. Required phantom power from mixer through an XLR-3 connector. On my lapel sounded so good on the Baldwin piano I play the audience could not hear my voice. So a guy at church straightened a coat hanger, put a hook on the end of it, and clipped the mike to that. Pointed at my mouth from 3" away, not at the piano. Coat hanger was on top of the piano held down by hymnals. I can't use a mike stand and a SM58 like BIlly Joel. It is a console piano and no room for the length of a SM58. I need to see the music on the rack around it, too. Tiny size is a big plus. I play and sing different songs every week and do not memorize them. Works great on my soft but accurate voice. Does not boost the piano behind it.
I had a Shure KSM27 stand mike for playing and singing autoharp, or for vccal groups. Picks up to 2 m away. Cardiod, angle of pickup about 45 deg. One mike for me and instrument, too. Unfortunately it was stolen and Shure does not make them anymore. Farnell sells one for $37 that looks like it, but response rolls off at 15000 hz.

If U like Primo, why no use EM282 with cardiod pattern and hi SPL ?
Or if you want narrow pattern you can use matched EM264Y connected back to back as in microphones used for cinema...
But "musical instruments" is a too large meaning, and I certainly not use the same microphone for accordion or for a double bass 😉
