I own the above computer as a source of digital music I only have daphile installed. And via an optical output connected to an external DAC. I have a SSD drive and would like to throw out a fan because I don't think I need it. I drilled some extra holes underneath the processor on the chassis, but when I unplugged the fan computer will not turn on. Anyone have any advice on how to fix this? I have four wires going to the fan, should I connect some or put a resistor or ...?
It is common that bios does not let the computer start when CPU fan does not signal proper rpms. My Lenovo X220 just printed "Fan error" and shut down at boot when the fan stopped working.

You need to build a small square wave oscillator circuit that emulates fan out signal.
I have heard of people cutting vanes off the fan to get around it.
Having said that I am not sure removing fan is wise.

That won't help when it overheats.
