Karlsonator 15 for Faital Pro 15PR400

Inspired by Troels and HumbleHomeHiFi I have ordered a pair of these 15inchers😆💪
But the karlsonator enclosure has always tempted me...
So before I finally make up my mind, any inputs from you more experienced fellas?
I cannot seem to find a karlsonator for 15s... only the original karlson. ?
Thanks. Plywood and saw getting warmed up...

-don't think you'd want system tuning lower than its 35Hz fs. What's the approximate Z-out for your flea amp? That will raise qes and qts.

You know, power-wise it would not hurt to have 200-500 watts available for that woofer on percussion transients 😀 Its interesting there's only about 2.5mm physical overhang for its coil vs top plate.

A Karlsonator the bulk of K15 "should" go to the low 40's. I would want some "punch" retained - the front chamber is doing a lot of that work.

X's Karlsonator model seems to work quite well and there's no one more helpful.

Yes that driver seem like a good one. Hopefully easy to integrate with relatively simple XO.
But it is not suited for a sealed cab. Unfortunately not an Onken either...
I think a sealed cab is slightly different than a Karlsonator...

Working very well for me in a sealed 120l cab with minidsp.
I suppose the sealed cab might not be ideal if you're looking for extreme volume at very low frequencies but for my lounge it goes ridiculously deep and loud, it's not remotely close to its limits.

I prefer punch over lowest reach, so 35-40Hz is fine. (Besides, I must have a reason to have the TH-sub in the corner.)

At the moment I have a cheap (LEM) PA speaker with a 15 and it is so much better than the Jamo it replaced (tho I admit the mid-highs are not the finest). One reason I decided to go for this woofer even tho I use flea amps is from this experiment.

Zout is probably 1ohm. My 2parallel SE amp is almost finished with rehab, and I think we are down to 0.5ohm on that one 🙄

Well that's interesting! I like sealed cabs. But all simulations and calculations with this driver suggests sealed is a bad idea. ? 120l is not too big at all.
Could you share some more info?

I modelled them in winisd, this indicated that they'd be almost 86db/1watt @ 30hz in 120l cab, plenty of headroom left there.
I stuck them into a set of VERY simple ply boxes just to get started but haven't felt the need to do much more as of yet?
I use minidsp with a calibrated UMIK and rew.

I don't bother too much with EQ on the woofer except for the low shelf. My listening area (room) is med. to large and one cab is closer to boundaries than the other. Lucky for me that both responses (L&R) equal a pretty even in room response below 100hz. That is to say a dip of 3-4db on one side is covered on the other side. Both combined show no obvious peaks or dips in response.

I do use EQ for the mid/tweeter.

Getting back to the Karlsonator, here is a good reference, xrk971, lots of links:

advantages of karlsonator
see: Post #2.

and from there:

Karlsonator

Post #18: "...I meant 18/12 or 1.5X. So it is a big 45 in tall x 23 in deep box. If you make it smaller (15/12) it still works nice but bass shelf is tilted so peak bass at 35 Hz is about 94 dB instead of 98 dB at 30 Hz.
Big drivers need big boxes!"

********************************

I found the drawing I made years ago for the original Karlsonator scaled x1.25 years ago (that would be nominal from 12" for the original Karlsonator to 15"). From what xrk971 indicates in the thread linked above (Post #42) x1.5 would go deeper, but it gets outside of desirable dimensions. It might be better to redraw, and keep depth and width below 24", and readjust the height to just below 48"? How much plywood do you have? 🙂

There should be a lot of range for adjustments in location and size of Karlson slot, and rear to front vent. So, even without simulation this might be possible?
