So I get a call I don't pick up in time. Later I look and see the facetime icon beside the number that called. I call back because they did not leave a voice mail. When I click on the number, my camera turns on and takes my picture, however that's where the call ends. I did this repeatedly but now with my finger covering the lens. My question is, did that caller receive my pic? Is this how a facetime call works? You can just sneakily get a pic of someone that way?
Try calling Apple support, they should know. There's a piece of painter's tape on my camera lens.
Facetime is a “video Phone”. The taking a picture is all is strange. But i rarely use facetime on my SE.

Excellent suggestion. Thank you.
Is there a chance that facebook is involved with this?
I have blocked it. It appears to originate in my town.
Of course it does. Scammers spoof the number so you'll pick up.
It sounds like Facetime should be called Facepalm. All those stupid social media sites are meccas for scammers and assorted slimeballs.
We no longer answer the phone unless we are certain of who it is.
There are way too many robocallers that can fake their number or name.

Even some of the scams I get in my yahoo 🙄 email are hokey but dangerous. Latest is "Your online reputation has been compromised" and to "fix" it I have to join some website where I can "correct" the misinformation.(Of course everyone in the world can view this compromising information but me. 😀) I'm sure that would end up well.
Yes I unsubscribe every time I see it, but it won't go away. That's pretty spammy.
Sorry you got scammed, Pete. Now let's wait and see what turns up on the web with your picture. 😀 Or maybe they'll try to extort you for your millions 😛

Every day I gat an urgent message that my Amazon or Apple or credit card has been suspended,
and I have to click the email's button to "fix" the problem. Yeah, right.

So Apple Support told me Facetime calls require permission from both parties to connect. So the pic my camera took went nowhere, otherwise I would have seen the other party.
That’s how it’s supposed to work. But malware often gets around normal security protocols. That picture could have gone *anywhere*. If it happens enough there would eventually be a patch to fix whatever they’re exploiting to make it do that.
Crap like that make you want to find out where/who, and give ‘em a 2x4 upside the head. Or drive a forklift through their server farm.

They're going to photochop your pic and try to extort you. They already have your email.
I've gotten a couple of emails where they claimed to have compromising pics of me they surreptitiously took with my webcam, and if I didn't wire them $50K they were going to send the pics to all my contacts. The problem is, I don't have any kind of cam on my computer. 😛
So this is our brave new world. Scumbags own it, scumbags rule it. Evidently this kind of stuff is A-OK with the authorities because they don't do anything about it. But if you buy your municipal sticker a day late, they get their knickers in a twist. It's like a bad dream. This is not a world for honest hard working people any more. We're just suckers now.

How would they have my email? This was a call on my cell.
Anyway, I'm not too concerned because I remember the pic, a shallow angle from my chest up toward my face. Not a very good shot at all. They may as well take yours and attach my name to it.

The proper response to that e-mail is: “Go to Hell. Go directly to Hell. Do not pass ‘GO’, do not collect $200”.
Never respond to a scam email.
I wouldn't mind having a few minutes alone with the scammer though.
