Stumbled on Steve Deckert's Zen Open Baffle project the other day. It features a fullrange on an Open Baffle along with a resonance chamber for bass augmentation.

Personally I find the simplicity compelling. Anyone tried to build anything similar?

as you say, an interesting idea, but I think not so simple, difficult to get the tuning right and of limited application. When he talks about "the absolute purity of a single driver", - well, I think you'll get lower distortion by going 2 way, and if you're having to built a resonant chamber anyway, you're back to a BR enclosure, with solid bass....
Some wild thoughts
Hmm, I wonder if the QM10 by GURU Loudspeakers (http://www.guruproaudio.com/newguru/?page_id=10) uses a similar approach?
The QM10 have a 4" woofer and it is known to produce unbelievable potent bass for its size. (Some opinions : audioasylum , SonicFlare ,.. more on google)
I think I remember from an interview that the designer actually used the term "helmholtz resonator" rather than "vented/ported box". Just speculations... so far 🙄
