This might be good for a project. Pretty big and made to use fans in a push/pull configuration:

There sure are! I am wondering if it could cool a stereo aleph 5, with fans cooling the heatsink in a push-pull configuration.

Some very hasty application of the 50/sqrt(A) formula says 0.25-0.33 C/W. Air cooled, maybe 3 times better than that?
At any rate, a nice sink. 🙂

I would think that this heatsink would definately require air cooling, unless you put it vertical, so that the air can rise through it naturally. I think that it could easily cool a stereo aleph 5, given air cooling.

All,
such heatsinks require fans. The fins are too close for passive convection.
www.fischerelektronik.de sells such stuff, too. Thermal resistance down to 0.02 K/W.

The heatsink may be manufactured by Aavid. They make heatsinks with pressed fins.

Reading the auction details (forgive me for the capitals, it is a quote) I would say there is a definite chance that it is Aavid:
"YOU ARE BIDDING ON AN AAVID HEATSINK BUILT TO ORDER THAT IS 18.625" LONG BY 7.375" WIDE BY 4.750 HEIGHT"

I'm using similar heatsinks in one of my amps. The fin spacing is even better and the fan is necessary. I bought one big piece and cut it in 4. Cost me $40.
The one on E-bay might be difficult to accomodate a fan. As you know the fans come in square sizes so if you put one directly on a sink, some fins will not be vented.😉
