How to wire up a mic for an iphone

I'm building a new cable and want to wire in a mic and volume control for my iPhone. I picked up the mic remote from Luna shops but am not 100% sure how to wire the connectors. I heard I just run a mic signal and tap the grounds. But I noticed on other cables both run to the top of the earphone. Am I missing something?
