hi,
my hqi bulb ignitor and ballast arrived 🙂
but now i have a little problem wiring it all up.
i figured out, how to wire the ignitor, but the ballast itself gives me a headache.
printed on the ignitor and on the ballast are the circuit-plans, but they don't match each other 🙁
basically my problem is how to wire up the ballast. it has 4 connection :
the first ist labelled "L" (left-side of ballast)
the second is labelled "Z 220V" (right side)
the third is labelled "Z 230V" (right side)
(i live in germany, we have 230V here 🙂) (ignitor is "zündgerät" in german, maybe this is what the Z stands fpr ?).
i won't want to risk miswiring the whole thing, so it would be nice, if someone could help me out 🙂.
i suppose i have to use one of those Z-connectors (230V will do) and the L-connector on the "other side" of the ballast.
my problem is, where to connect it to the ignitor and which side is for my normal power-plug in the wall ?
This is were the two circuit-layouts won't match 🙁.
the ballast is an "BBC DJ150" for which i haven't found any specs yet 🙁
maybe even though someone is able to help me 🙂 ?
thanks in advance

hi,
had a hard time, getting my scanner to work again, and in the end, i used good old ms-paint 😉
here is the circuit-diagram from the ignitor and the ballast (the Z in the ballasts circuit diagram means "zündgerät" -> ignitor, i think).
i can't figure out, how to wire up the ballast, cause in one diagram the small line from the ballast-symbol shows in one direction when everything is put together, in the other diagram it points in the other direction.
thanks for helping 😉

Both drawings are the same; you have 3 connections on your ballast, only 2 are used. The ballast can be connected either way as long as you leave the connection for 220V unused(polarity = dont care).
L,N connect to your 230V. (polarity = dont care)
Just use the schematic from the ignitor, that one is the easiest to trace.
btw
I don't see any capacitors in your schematic. Your power supplier wont like that. (and it might cause interference on the powerline and screw up radio reception)

hi,
i tried wiring it up, using the ignotors diagram, turn on the power switch, and my room went dark (fuse came out).
any ideas, what i might have done wrong ?
there are no circuits short etc. 🙁
do i have to ground the ignitor also ?
(i did connect the ground to the ballast, cause there was a screw with the symbol for ground on it, but there's no such symbol on the ignitor... just this huge screw 🙂 ).
any ideas ?
thx 😉

Assuming your parts are not defective you *****ed up during wiring 🙂
All you need to do is enlarge the schematic from the ignitor, put your parts on it (top left=bulb, center ignitor, ballast on the right) and connect pieces of wire according to the lines on the paper.
The connections on the ignitor viewed from the top (where the schematic is on) correspond with the connections as shown on the schematic. Remember not to use the 220V connection on the ballast.
I cant be more specific then this. (Give a child some wire, an enlarged schematic and this description and he'll get it wright 😉 )
Good luck
ps
Grounding wont hurt as long as you use the ground wire (= green+yellow in the Netherlands). Ignitors are embedded in plastic, no way to ground that.

heya bud, ya well if i hear a bang over here in spain i know what it is lol, anyway abit off topic here where did u get your cdm-t gear from and how much if u dont mind me asking?
thanks Trev

i double checked it and it seems to be correctly wired. i was using a multiple
power-socket thing (sorry, don't know the correct expression for it 🙁 ).
basically it is something, you connect to your power socket, to increase the number of power sockets you have 😉
this "multiple power socket thing" has a swith, to turn it on and off. when flipping the switch (with my setup plugged in) the fuse drops out. i remember having a similar effect when connecting my tv to it and switching it on.
maybe our wires can't handle that much current at once ?

sounds like an overload of current try it with out it, the thing is called a double adapter, and they are dangerous lol but u have a protected one so it should be ok, whats the rating on it?

Well, getting a bulb should have been easy; I live in the home town of Philips.
So, I got my ballast and bulbs from ebay.de lol
I payed 8 euro's/piece for the 150W CDM-T bulbs and 18 euro's for the ballast (I got the ignitor from a spotlight I had lying around)

ya ive seen a few there cheap but i dont speak the language nor type it lol would u sell me a bulb plzzz? id be very grateful, also maybe i might have somthing u dont have as in reflectors or condensers ect so we might be able to strike up a deal along the way!

I've 'only' got 3 bulbs. I'm planning to use one (or more) in my toshiba tlp670 when its bulb goes. The best I can do is lend you one. I would expect to get one back when you manage to get your own from ebay.de
I can also help with the language (as can most german forum members hehe)

Thanks heaps rapsac thats a great help, i dont realy like to borrow stuff as if anything gets broken then there is always some one not happy i dont like that risk lol and it is nothing like owning it yourself, but however thanks for the offer and the language offer ill take up no worries as soon as i see somthing like a decent deal lol that i would email u and maybe we could go halfs in it or somthing depending on what it is and if u wanted anything in the deal, at the moment i can get a cdm-t ballast its electronic for about 42euro's its also 230v its not a bad price but if your interested let me know by email so i can hook u up.
