How to apply right way the pot for balanced output?

Hello; I know it's silly question, but please help..

I want to build preamp for mic with balanced input.
I use SSM2019 as preamp & SSM2142 for balanced output.

What is the correct use of pot for set gain/volume of this equipment?
I set the gain of SSM2019 by resistors/dip switches & than put
potentiometer or after balanced output? But how?
