Help me spec miniDSP system

Hey there --

I am looking for some help spec'ing out my MiniDSP system for my 2-way OB speakers. The OB are built using Alpha 15a speakers for the woofer and 8" wild burro betsys for the full range.

Build info is here:
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/229319-2-way-ob-betsy-k-alpha-15a-minidsp-active-cross-build-log-measure-log.html

I currently have a MiniDSP 2x4 and my system flow is as follows

Laptop -> ApogeeDUET => MiniDSP 2x4 -> Battery-powered Class-D for Betsy and Rotel RB1050b for Alpha 15a.

The main concern I have is the unnecessary A/D and D/A conversion that is happening between the Duet and the MiniDSP 2x4.

I am at a loss at the best way to move forward with my system. I am thinking building a more cohesive block-based system might be the best option.

My class-d amp is powered by a 12-volt 7 Ah SLA battery, which could easily power the miniDSP and several DACs. Or I could get the NanoDigi 2x8 and run S/PDIF in and then 2x external S/PDIF out before the amps. But still that would not be a clean setup, and I don't want two big external DACs needing power supplies etc.

I'd love a single box that has an optical in that I can run the output of a yet-to-be-purchased airport express into. The optical signal is feed to the miniDSP, which performs the crossover and EQ needed, and then to 4-channels of battery-powered DAC. The HF would be powered by the battery-powered Class-D inside this chassis, and the LF would be RCA outputs to wire up the External power amp.

I'd love a single volume control. It looks like some of the stuff at TwistedPear audio would do what I need, but I don't know where to start. I just want to avoid buying a lot of stuff that won't work or can't do what I need.

Any help would be much appreciated, sorry for the brain-dump but I am just trying to find the best way forward...

The MiniDSP 4x10 has an optical digital input and volume control. I've used it with active speakers (amps built in) sourced from a Sony CD transport via the toslink, used the 4x10 digital volume control, then to the amps via long RCA interconnects. That seems to be more along the lines of what you are looking for.

Charlie --

That would do it assuming that the DACs in the MiniDSP 4x10HD are reasonable enough. That would save an AD/DA stage. I could have the airport express/apple tv optical out into the 4x10 and then analog to my amps. Or Analog in from my TT into the 4x10.

That is basically what the Behringer DCX2496 would also let me do. I know there are various opinions on that product, though.

Thanks!
Dan
