help me pick subwoofers

i was looking for a single sub woofer setup for a HT based setup... but as many have told me a multiple driver setup will be much more efficient...

budget 1600$ for subwoofers 1800$ MAX

looking for the optimum performance all around in a SQL setup i can get... suggestions?

I'd recommend using 4 of Exodus Audio's new Shiva-X subwoofer drivers in separate enclosures, depending on the size of the room. The use of multiple subs allows you to place them in the room in such a way as to avoid room modes or at least most of them. Multiple subs will give tremendous bass, without strain and the Shiva-X already has low distortion compared to most drivers. Used with decent plate amps and building your own cabinets you will still be under budget and have a near SOTA bass system. They also have larger drivers, with even more output, that might be used in a larger room.

room is actually fairly small 14' 6" x 16' 9" x 8'6" (drop ceiling)

You certainly could, although with a room that small it might be overkill. Four Shiva-X subs with PE Bash amps would probably be more than enough to blow out your windows. I must be getting old as I've come to believe that you can actually have too much bass:bigeyes:
The Tempest is also a great driver and will certainly deliver the goods, although the Shiva-X is on sale now and that's why I mentioned them first.

I love horns, but no I wouldn't. I'd actually go with a 4 cu ft sealed enclosure. With room gain you'll get the extension, no group delay and IMHO, they'll sound the best.

Another possibility, if you really want to go over the top, would be some big bifurcated Transmission Line subs, along the line of the ones that Dave Ruether did in the late 70's.
Those, boys and girls, were impressive to say the least, using Hartley 18 and 24 inch drivers.
