To all, I’ve lurked on and off on this site for some time, and I thought now was a good time to join. My subdivision has been declared a superfund site (brand new house and I have lived here for only 5 months) and that has pretty much killed all home improvement projects, so now my efforts are back to DIY audio. I've built a couple of tube kits (Foreplay and PARASex from Bottlehead.com) and a headphone amp from Headwize.com. I picked up a Pass Zen and Bride of Zen PC boards from audioXpress some time ago and have never really found the time, until now. I look forward to being part of this unique community, and I hope to learn a lot.......Colin

Well Hello ColinHester from Cincinnati!
Sorry to hear about the house. I grew up in Buffalo just when the whole Love Canal thing was blowing up. I guess the good news for you is that your getting out before anything unspeakable happens.
Sounds like you’ve got some great projects in the works. I doubt that I'll be the guy helping you with them (far more competent than the likes of me around here) but I'm sure we'll all enjoying seeing them develop.
I had a friend from Cincinnati who spent a year hanging around and recording with some guy named Bootsy.

I'm afraid you're going to have to explain that. Judging by the context, it sounds like the equivalent of, "We're going to build a motorway over your house." Anyway, looking on the bright side, something that gives you more time for valves can't be all bad.
So, welcome. See you on the "tubes" forum.
as they used to say in Cleveland: "I wouldn't give a Cincinnatti Dutchman a piece of rope to hang himself with" -- I am sure it was actually "Deutschman" as many of the inhabitants of Western and Southern Ohio were of German extraction.
I just moved to Michigan from Cincinnati last year.
I lived in the Clifton area after going to school at UC for 5 years, up at the top of the Ravine Street hill ( the one next to Straight Street that was at such a steep incline that the city had to barracade it off whenever it got the least bit icy ).
Anyways, the only thing i REALLY miss about Cincy is the close proximity to the Party Source over in Newport, KY.

Whats a "Superfund"?
Back in 1977, after a small subdivision in Niagara Falls New York, realized that the reason their children were all dieing, and that the drums of waste filled with PCB and Dioxin laden oils that there homes were built on, and the sludge that was percolating into their basements, and the drums that were starting to surface in the back yards, and that cancer and leukemia rates were too high, were all related, people started to pressure our local and federal lawmakers to step in and help out.
Naturedly these people’s houses were ruined. They had no value at all and the families all needed to leave every thing they owned, immediately. The former Hooker Chemical Company claimed no responsibility.
Long Story short, the Superfund was created. The goals of the program are multi faceted. Protect the public health and private home real estate investments. Protect the environment. Protect commerce and the economy by not bankrupting companies that “naively” dumped has-mats. Protect the Federal government by not requiring the taxpayers to foot 100% of the cleanup and relocation costs.
Its my understanding that the Superfund uses a long term finance approach to funding with contributions from both industry and tax revenues being used to fund the project.

Oh, good grief. I wish I hadn't asked.
Colin: What appallingly bad luck. I can't say anything adequate.

Thanks to all for your comments. It is certainly appreciated right now.
Reply post #2 - Yes, I have heard of Bootsy Collins, although I don't have any of his recordings - not my taste. The "Cincinnati Magazine” did a write up on him a year or so ago. I don't remember much about it, other that he would only be interviewed in full dress, and he lives in The Village of Indian Hills - the VERY exclusive part of Cinci.
Reply post #3 - No, no motorway. The subdivision I currently live in started development about two years ago. It sits on 25 acres that was previously farmland, and, oh yeah, there was a sheet shooting range there before that. The developer "tried" to clean it up before being sold to the builder. Long story short - the neighborhood is contaminated with lead (actually lead / arsenic alloy) shot. Currently lots of lawsuits.
Reply post #4 - As we say in Cinci about Cleveland: At least our rivers don't catch on fire. Just kidding. I would really like to get up there and see the RR Hall of Fame. My boss is from Cleveland, born and raised there, and has really positive things to say about the city.
Reply post #5 - I know exactly where Straight is. My wife taught at UC in the Communications Dept. as a visiting scholar a few years ago. I always heard about it when she had to walk that hill.
Reply post #6 - In this case the taxpayers will not pay the bill for remediation. The EPA quickly identified the responsible party and is making them pay. Did you ever hear of Times Beach, MO? I lived down the Mother Road (Routee 66) from there - very similar situation to that in NY. If I recall correctly, transformer oil (again, PCB laced) was spread on the town's streets to control dust. The town was quickly closed and a big fence put around it. I had a friend in grad school that looked at the decomposition of the PCB at this site. Scary stuff..........

where is the "babe-a-licious" Loni Anderson these days -- this was a great show, back when Pete Rose was a virgin.
