Heatzinking before and now...

Might be an FAQ question...sorry
I have attached a picture wich shows different heatzinks
To the left from a denon pma 850 (28 years old) 85w with 1 outputpair / ch 6,5 kg toroid 2*2*40v AC
To the right from a NAD 3080 100w 2 outputpair/ch 6 kg trafo
1*ct 26,5 v AC
And behind those wich i have used fore my KSA 50 with 3 outputpairs/ch
In that case i was recommended to use fans too, even though that the heatzinks are big.
Most amplifiers build in this forum got huge heatzinks and my main question is, what makes the difference from older heavy gear till new heavy gear ?
Before i decided to take the Denon apart i played with it and it never did get very hot-and it was class A ....

The power consumption rating on the back is given as a MAXIMUM and normally also includes any switched AC outlets the amp may have, sometimes also the unswitched. In other words, unless you know how it's wired internally, and sometimes not even then, it's a pretty much useless figure.
