Have I destroyed my amp?

Hi

This is my first post on the site so please bear with me🙂

I have built a set of Ariel me2's which I have had the parts for hanging around for about 10 years. They have been sounding great but I think that a short in one of the crossovers may have damaged the class d amp i have been running.

Now when I turn the amp on it has very little power and high levels of distortion . It still does make sound. Pulled the lid off the amp and can't see anything obvious.

It is a Digitech 75 watt amp from Jaycar in australia, it was sounding great before this.

I am not sure how to.go about tracking down the problem but if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated, I might as well try to learn how to fix this if possible.

Cheers Chris wood

I built a pair of ME2 many years ago. They sat for years unused while I went on to other projects. I looked at using the vifa woofers again and found that their resonance frequencies had gone up to about 150 Hz. I could not lower them with break in. You might want to check that on yours, although I'm sure that has nothing to do with your amp problem.

Welcome to diyaudio.com, Chunga72!

Amp has short circuit protection. The power indicator light extinguishes when short circuit protection is activated.

Try it again after removed from power for period of time to allow resetting the short circuit protection.

Check the power supply voltage is still >32V by measuring the voltage across its barrel plug contacts.

Check the input signal to the amp using another device with line input, like computer or headphone amp, or receiver. Unrelated problems happen at same time so the audio gods may laugh at us.

If possible swap in another known good amplifier to confirm this amp is damaged.

It supposed to have a one year warranty, so return it for new one.

HI,

Thanks dave for the heads up on this i will keep an eye out for the probs, speakers were working fine to this point.

Thanks Richidoo for the advice tried the swap out, different amp worked perfect.

Unplugged swapped out etc but still no luck, will swap under warranty.

Still would love to know what the problem could be with the amp. It seems weird that it is still functiong just super quiet and high distortion levels. Will have a measure of the power supply asap.

Many Thanks Chris W

I am really loving the sound of these chip amps!
