Google Home box

I was looking at the Google Home tear down on ifixit and found a strange design in the enclosure.

What you see below is one half of the Google home box. The red arrow is pointing to a plastic divider. When both halves are combined the dividers leave only a narrow gap between the bottom chamber (where the full range driver and passive radiators are mounted) and the top chamber.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I checked with my mechanical engineer friend and he said the divider serves no purpose with regards to the structural integrity of the box.

Does anyone know if this has anything to do with the acoustics of the box?
