fOSTEX fw168hp Enclosure advice

I have a pair of these drive units and was wondering if someone could help in the design of a back-loaded Horn design as I have tried before and due to the paramaters and my poor calculations I havn't been able to come up with a design that I trust,

could someone please help me out a little?

you could try this design methodology, though I'd suggest
splitting the design effectively in half so its only one horn.
(i.e. just over half the height)

Hmm, not an easy driver to wok with at first glance. J-Lo might be good. The Fostex Factory horns probably won't work. Here's an idea: you could try one of Terry Cain's Bigger Is Better TQWTs. Actually they're not TQWTs at all, but a back-loaded corner horn. They are a very tall, quite deep but relatively narrow cabinet, with a horn-mouth venting out the top. Try these dimensions for the FW168HP: 8" wide, 16" deep, 64" tall (external, assuming 3/4" build material). Mount the driver at 36" from the base. There is a sloping internal baffle that starts at the top, touching the inside of the front baffle, and terminates 5.875" from the floor and 5.875" from the internal front and rear enclosure walls. You'll need a bit of series resistance as these drivers are not ideal; their Q is a bit low -either put a small resistor in the hot lead, or use something like 30AWG magnet wire as speaker cable. A tweeter could either be mounted just below the main driver, or pod-mounted on the side. Shoved into corners, you should get 40Hz, give or take.

Half price or what!

I’ve just noticed Madisound selling the Fostex FW168HP-X High Qts version 7” HP CONE FULL RANGE at half price(ish) $119 each

But this thread hasn’t lead to too much activity? Has any one actually heard these drivers and would they be worth the current asking price. If so I’d be very tempted to build a TQWT as per Scott’s dimensions above.

so are you the guy that bought 2 of the last 3 fw168hp's from madisound? My friend was just gonna buy the last 3 cause i only had enough for 6 of the 9. good luck. we were thinking bipole or use as a midrange for a 3 way. horn loading with a super tweet was also appealing.

the fw168hp-x is just a tad too low sensitivity for my application in the 3 way but for a full ranginsh app it might do quite well.

KOA - nope; I didn't buy these drivers as I couldn't see a positive reply about a suitable cabinet

its been a while since i wrote the 1st post!!

Well i still have the speakers but have them in a tapered line enclosure tuned at 1/4 of the wavelength of the res frequency.

I bout some cheap tweeters and Xovers and the sound nice in a big room!

Anyhow Im still up for ideas, I think I might just put them in a ported enclosure or even just rebuild the cabs with better tweeters and Xovers.
if anyone wants the drivers then i would be looking at selling.

I have a creative 7.1 T7900 system I bought but Im thinking of making my own speakers/sub as they r crap and use the existing amplifier.

Any ideas??
