Forum now uses transparency for PNGs, some old transparent PNGs were uploaded assuming they would be displayed on a light theme not dark theme

Png format attachments that have proper light background in the thumbnail preview, when opened with forum picture viewer, have dark transparent background, which makes details impossible to see. When downloaded and opened at the client PC, pictures are displayed correct. Example, post #2 attachments:
Issue example

I have checked those graphix and they are working right. They have a transparent background and as such it becomes whatever colour it is sitting on (black in this case).

The issue is not the forum it is the format iof the png.

It looks more to do with the choice of theme the user has.

When a transparent PNG is overlayed on 'Dark' theme, it is pretty hard to read. 'Classic' theme isn't much better but still legible.

It might be better to just render transparent PNG as white background, but I don't know how hard that would be.

This is what transparent vs white background looks like in 'Dark':

Transparent.PNG

So the issue if if a member posts a PNG with a transparent background, it does exactly what it's meant to do and displays with a transparent background? 🙂

I think this is a feature, not a bug.

No matter dark or white background, your transparency will work perfectly and it will nicely blend into whatever background it is displayed on.

If you make a PNG, and don't want part of it to be transparent, or want it to have a white background, then make the background white, and don't use transparency. If you use transparency you are always at the whim of reprocessing, and rolling the dice as to whether you get black, white, or "undefined" when your image is converted to JPEG/WEBP etc.

I think this is an "how to edit graphics" education issue personally.

Pictures were posted last year when transparent background didn’t matter.
Ah, got it, of course...

What we could (eventually) do is put a white background on all PNG images that were uploaded pre-migration. That would fix the issue. How much work would be required? Hard to say. The programmer in me says "That's just a 5 minute bash script", the jaded grey-beard in me says "Let's see how many ways this can go wrong and take 2 days" 🙂

I'll add this to the roadmap.

I stole this image from another site (I did not edit it), it displays good in a message, but is real ugly in the image viewer. Try it.

I don't need a fix, just suggesting it as a test subject. (Yes, I know how to make it solid, but transparents have their place.)

I fixed that
Well, thanks, but it was inoffensive for 15 years. The change is the new forum display.

There may be no answer. Creators of "transparent" GIFs/PNGs usually had a background tone in mind (if they even thought). Was it white? black? pale fuchsia? Simply forcing an opaque background could be very wrong. Individual inspection and vetting is too much work.

A theoretical "fix" would be to give the viewer a choice of white black or pick-of-rainbow background. But unless that code already exists in the forum viewer that is really more work than it is worth.

BTW: with a half-dozen clicks I was able to bring the ripples GIF into an image editor which can display 'transparent' as checkers (so the creator can know where clear is).

I fixed that, but the thunbail looks like a B&W of dots and the black background of the slide shown has transparent background has the transparency of the gif abnd the black & white schematic becomes more or less unreadable.

I don't see any fix except a timestamp in the lower right corner indicating a moderator have altered something in the post, with dark theme enabled it's still difficult to read due to the background still being transparent.

Here it is in its intended glory

Not sure what is intended here, it looks terrible with dark theme enabled, here below a screenshot what I see with Dark theme enabled.

Here below are the fixes done according to the tutorial I posted in another post, see link below, scroll down to the second half of that post for the tutorial using Gimp, works for both GIF and PNG with transparent background.

And here is another post with a transparent picture that needs to be updated, see the 2nd picture.
