Electrical Cost?

I'm new to this and haven't built a project yet, but I'm thinking about building one with a 575 watt metal halide bulb... that sounds like it would cost a lot of electricity. What are the real electrical costs of a setup like this? How does the power consumption compare with a regular CRT tv set?

no you dont...

compared to a crt set, the projector will use a tiny bit more power. not a WHOLE lot. but about as much as a rear projection set. not a real big concern. when i had mine, and had my whole stereo running, ALL day, my electrical bill went up like $5 or so a month. its pretty small. it definately not a factor to consider if you are planning on building it... the cost of $5 is so much less than the cost of building the unit...

First we need to know the price rate of electricity in your location.

The fact that you have to turn off your lights and darken the room is going to save a lot of that electricity- probably enough to make this more efficient than a CRT.

Also, the blackout curtains will give your windows extra insulation in the winter, and will block out heat in the summer.

In addition, in the winter, if you are using non-heatpump electric heat, your projector (and a regular TV) will produce about the same amount of heat per watt as your heater- so any extra electricity used by your setup will prevent your heater from burning that same amount.
