I have a pair of these and was thinking of running around 2A as choke loaded source followers . The gm is higher but the curves don't look as nice as those for BUZ900P , which looks like a better device for single ended . Is it worth the extra cost of a pair of BUZ900P or will these Exicons perform well ?

You can do load lines like what is used for vacuum tubes to determine operating points for lowest distortion etc. Just an example with 20 volt B+ and 10ohm load, showing usable voltage swing before the onset of distortion.

It suggests a lot of 2nd harmonic and whatever else thrown in :) Not a particularly linear device but then again the curves don't tell you everything . Low order harmonics are fine but even with the 100% local feedback of the follower , I'd still be slightly concerned about the distortion . For £22 I can get a pair of BUZ900P delivered and these (on paper) look much more suitable . What is putting me off is shelling out for more expensive transistors , especially when I also have exotics such as Semisouths languishing in the parts drawer .
