Yes, I agree with you about the EC86's characteristics and for that reason I use it as the second, amplifying, stage in my phono preamp (a simple grounded cathode stage using an LED for bias). Use gridstopping resistors to ward off oscillation.
 
I used a 12K load to a .22 coupling cap and 234k grid resistor for the 45. B+ is around 150V and cathode resistor is 162 ohms bypassed with 35uF. I used a 420 ohm gridstopper.
This how I'm using it as well with the Russian version 6S4P-DR in my SE 6V6. Lovely sound. Just with a 470k grid resistor and 330ohm gridstopper. Not that that matters much I think.

If you have some difficulties to find them, you might also want to look for it's series heated P Version, which is exactly the same tube (besides the heater, of course).
Note the gold plated pins which aren't that common for an ordinary, non SQ valve.
