I´m planning to use them as input tube in a two stage 6B4G SE amp. Seems like a very nice tube, high gm and µ, plenty of current and very linear.
This seems to be a great tube, doesn't it? Perhaps it would be suitable for cascode use. I wonder how easy it is to find on the market?
Yes, I agree with you about the EC86's characteristics and for that reason I use it as the second, amplifying, stage in my phono preamp (a simple grounded cathode stage using an LED for bias). Use gridstopping resistors to ward off oscillation.
Here's how I used it:

I used a 12K load to a .22 coupling cap and 234k grid resistor for the 45. B+ is around 150V and cathode resistor is 162 ohms bypassed with 35uF. I used a 420 ohm gridstopper.
I believe this gives a grid voltage of about -2.5V. Has no problem driving the 45 from a vcr to full power (1 - 1.5 watts).

This how I'm using it as well with the Russian version 6S4P-DR in my SE 6V6. Lovely sound. Just with a 470k grid resistor and 330ohm gridstopper. Not that that matters much I think.I used a 12K load to a .22 coupling cap and 234k grid resistor for the 45. B+ is around 150V and cathode resistor is 162 ohms bypassed with 35uF. If you have some difficulties to find them, you might also want to look for it's series heated P Version, which is exactly the same tube (besides the heater, of course).
Note the gold plated pins which aren't that common for an ordinary, non SQ valve.
Best regards!
