E.M.I. DLS529 Two-Way 4ohm Drivers are the EMI 319

I just bought a set of crossovers/tweeters from an E.M.I. DSL529 without the originals drivers. Now after a little search on the internet I realize is almost impossible(?) replace theses odd animals. All I know about the original woofers is the shape: ellipticals 13" x 8" 4 ohm 20HZ (?) not sure.... :wave2s: Anyone can help me with any suggestion about similar drivers to make this X.O.4500/4 crossovers and tweeters works? thanks, JR

You should trace the crossover schematic to have any idea how it works. Second order, I would guess.

People also used to use these sort of drivers with a single 4uF cap to the tweeter back in the valves day.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

My own take on this is a retro-looking paper surround 8" bass, like these Sony E44 speakers I own. They originally had a single cap too, but I did a lot better with a proper crossover. I subsequently discover that SABA radio speakers like Greencones are not a million miles away:

Very good sound indeed. Highly efficient too. The Sony tweeter is very good, so I didn't replace it with a cone tweeter, but you could also try the Monacor HT22/8 tweeter if you want. 🙂

Dear Steve, Thanks for your help. Here pictured is what I have except the oval EMI drivers. What I'm looking for is a similar speaker as a replacement since I only have crossovers and tweeters. Some similar driver, any idea? Thanks again

I did understand the problem, but without the bass drivers you have really wasted your money. And I really can't tell you much about the crossover from looking at a sealed unit!

You might be able to do something along the same lines for a valve amp with these two 8" units:

B 200 - 6 Ohm
BG 20 - 8 Ohm

Strassacker: Speaker Building, Components

Model it in Boxsim. Start with something like this:

Best I can suggest. 🙂

I just found the circuit for the Cheap Trick CT230.

I don't rate the TW6 particularly. You might try your existing tweeters or the Monacor HT22/8 which you can model pretty much as if it was a TW70 without the 14kHz HF peak.

Bear in mind this is a fullrange BG20 with the whizzer cone removed with some work with a razor blade or Stanley Knife. The B200 might be easier.

The circuit makes sense at some level, especially the Zobel on the bass. But I think I could do better. That LCR on the tweeter is a bit weird, but the input LCR is impedance correction for SET amplifier. 🙂

Most people will fling their hands up in horror at this sort of retro thing, but it can sound stunningly good and musical when well-implemented. 😎

This is very difficult. They really don't make drivers like they used to. I didn't like what I saw with those fullrangers. 😕

We really want a paper driver with corrugated paper surround and preferably, vented magnet and cloth dustcap. The Eminence Beta 8 is not far off that idea, but possibly too efficient here.

I'd take on this Visaton W200S in your situation, it doesn't need much filtering:
Visaton W200S-8 8" Woofer with Treated Paper Cone 8 Ohm | 292-572

It's a sort of poor man's SEAS CA22RNY.

Then give your tweeters, wired in series for 8 ohms (?), a go like this. 30 L ( 1 cubic foot) cabinet, reflex or closed box to taste.
