does anyone have any idea what normally goes on these boards? they are from various different amps like helix, autotek etc

Is this a generic question or do you have an amp that you're having trouble repairing?

i have an amp called a viper that im having trouble with, if i replace the card with 1 from a working amp, the amp works fine but if i fit this driver in it goes straight into protect. checked all components and they all check fine

Did you try removing the rectifiers so that you could look at the drive signals with your scope?

Removed rectifiers, no drive signal

I'm assuming that you've confirmed that the TL072 in the driver board has supply voltage on it's two power supply pins and that the driver board is back in the circuit.

If you drive a strong signal into the amp, what do you see on pin 1 and 7 of the TL072 on the driver board?

Its a faulty tl072 perry, ive replaced it and the amp is working perfectly, thanks for the help again
