DIY Plans 8"+1"

Looking for some well known or vetted plans for a 8+1 build to end my diy venture . I have been hunting the internet for a month now for "known brand" speakers and 8+1 are astronomically insane for pricing. I tired looking for ones that used the 10 stupid RS225-4 sitting in my basement going to waste, but seems that woofer is a pile to 2way without a gold mine XO.

I did see the Suzie-Q, but $63 just for the digital plans is absolutely stupid IMO-

Looking for something that wont be a little baby being able to be tuned to 40hz, I absolutely loath having to have subs on for music and having to turn everything on for music.

This will replace my garbage speakers in my theater- and end my speaker obsession hopefully until im rich or have not as many kids at home lol which at this rate wont be until im 80

FWIW, I went with 2x Seas H1252-08 and 1x 18Sound NSD1095N per side, which works really nicely. The crossover is just below 1kHz, pretty steep, and has a notch to help kill off the cone breakup. The RS225 will likely need similar. Trying to match such a driver to a typical 1" dome tweeter would likely be very difficult, but compression drivers will run lower and have more headroom.

To keep the wiring and impedance sensible, I'd suggest 4x RS225-4 per side with a good compression driver. MTMWW would be a sensible layout. With that much cone area, you could probably tune pretty low and still have decent output available.

That only leaves 2x RS225 going to waste, and I'm sure you could think of something to do with those.

What about a pair of JBL 308Pmk2 ?
2-400$. Demount the baffle and give it some strengthening/damping, use sub low pass.

Put those RS225 to use as subs/stands for it with a plate amp/dsp.

Push/pull side mounted in 2 pairs and one frount mounted fx, will let you use all 5 pr. Side.
Or as a 2'5" way wife 4 side mounted and one to cross to a tweeter.
No kits available for such option though.

Also a option for rs225:

Check Matt Grant's page:

He is the designer in many diyaudiosoundgroup.com speakers.

I have built the Nexus TM and the Nexus Center, and both are very nice speakers. The Flex 8 looks very promising.

"Edit May 19, 2020: this is the XO for the 4ohm RS225-4. You can use your favorite 8ohm 3.5in full range on top. Just make sure it’s 8ohms and adjust R1 to taste."

Build something like this:
Shavano Music Speaker Wiring
https://web.archive.org/web/20090115011405/http://colomar.com/Shavano/spkr_wiring.html

A(RS225-4 + - Series RS225 + -) = 8 ohms
B(RS225-4 + - Series RS225 + -) = 8 ohms
Parallel A 8ohms and B 8 ohms = 4 ohms (SPL ?)
Use the 4 ohm crossover, skip the BSC, find a higher SPL Fullrange

Faital Pro 3FE22-8 , 3FE25-8 91db (any higher?) or live with a downward slope on the high end.

48"x12" , 48" x 14" shelving, etc....double it or something thicker, braces, etc.
Selectives 48 in. L x 14 in. D White Laminate Wall Mounted Shelf

I'm torn on that. The Amps Lab ones are now $25 instead of free like they used to be. Granted $25 is less than the $63, but the Heissmann designs seem a bit more refined and he includes off axis measurements, which are really nice.

I'm thinking of doing the suzie-q at some point. I do wish I could price all the crossover components in advance. $348 for the drivers isn't bad but not knowing what the current price and availability of the inductors is makes it a bit of a leap of faith.

I am not so sure I'd rate 60€ charge for Suzie-Q digital plans too expensive.

Zaph Audio ZD5 one channel crossover only (2 boards) costs 210$.
Subtract the passive parts cost, it is 118$. For a pair then 236$.

Schematic is freely available, so 236$ represents the cost of 4 large pcb's and the
assembly.

I put the components in a cart and they come to $132.30, leaving $78 for the board. Say $15 for the PCB gets you $63 to solder 21 components ....seems reasonable. I hate soldering crossovers, I'd almost be willing to pay this if I wasn't so cheap.

Madisound shop-Zaph Audio ZD5, one loudspeaker passive parts, 2 pcb's, $209.90;

Madisound shop- 18 items cart subtotal $107.8; one loudspeaker, passive parts
  • resistors-wirewound 15W
  • capacitors-MDL XPP polypropylene, smaller values, 250V
  • capacitors-MDL NPE 100V, larger values
  • inductors -Madisound 19AWG air core
  • inductor -1.8mH 14AWG Solen Perfect Lay
You could opt for a Madisound steel laminate 2mH and ask to unwind to spec, saves you 16$ minus fee, or DIY.

PE shop-18 items cart subtotal $53.31, one loudspeaker, passive parts
  • resistors-Parts Express wirewound 10W
  • capacitors-Dayton Audio polypropylene, smaller values, 250V
  • capacitors-Parts Express NPE 100V, larger values
  • inductors -Dayton Audio 20AWG air core
  • inductor -2mH, 18AWG Dayton Audio laminated steel I-core, needs unwinding

Thanks for the ideas- trying to stick with a traditional tweeter. I already did the FAST and was muffled to me imo
You need to look for larger dia tweeters 29-30mm that will allow you to xover low as possible
Scan over Parts Express yielded something like
Wavecor TW030WA11 These maybe discontinued by the looks(used these before with some RS180-4)

Dayton Audio DC28F-8 1-1/8" Silk Dome RST28F-4 1-1/8"

Morel CAT 308 or CAT 378 1-1/8"

Peerless DA32TX00-08 1-1/4" Corundum Dome Tweeter

These look nice if you can afford the price tag🤔
SB Acoustics Satori TW29BNWG-4 Beryllium Dome Tweeter with Waveguide
Seas Excel T35C002 - E0055 1-1/2" Coated Fabric Dome Tweeter

the 10 stupid RS225-4 sitting in my basement going to waste

What were your original plans for these woofers? Maybe it's a good opportunity to make an isobaric box (2 woofers mounted clam shell in half the box volume)?

Lojzek also another $300 in drivers-per speaker

5.5 Woofer $220+tax x2
Tweeter $35+tax x2
.PE shop-18 items cart subtotal $53.31, one loudspeaker, passive parts
Madisound shop- 18 items cart subtotal $107.8; one loudspeaker, passive parts
So Do i have that correct? $900+ for two speakers NO box or materials for that yet....haha insanity

Full range Home theater speakers. But I was lead down the wrong path- I should have gotten 8ohm version.. Then I was going to do the FASTWAF thingy with full range, but the RS100 i used it sounded weak and I didnt want to spend another $100+ on a single different fullrange
