desktop digital amp

Bingo. I’d built a 4 channel class D (not digital, BTW) amp for custom application, and even with salvaged chassis and other mechanical parts from scrap, the cost was well over that of a pre-built Topping TP30. I’ve had one of those for at least 5 years for home computer system, and one at work which I reclaimed upon my retirement . Great value, very compact form factor, and the DAC in models with USB input is at least on par with sound cards in the 4 computers with which I’d used them.

If you really want to build something, perhaps something like the ACA, or Neurochrome 386DR or Modulus86? All of those options will definitely cost more than a small desktop class D, but would satisfy that “jonesing to build” with which even a retired DIYer can identify.
