Hi,
I have been ordering ELNA Silmic II capacitors for years (from Mouser), and to date all the Silmic II that I have received have a brown jacket.
Recently I have been obliged to order a few Silmic II from another store and curiously the capacitors do not have a brown jacket but a Black/Gold jacket that I had never seen before: see the attached photos.
Do you know if they are counterfeit or genuine Elna Silmic II ???

Thank you very much for your reply,

Thank you very much for your reply,
They look fake. Elna only list brown and white label for Simic II.
Try a magnet near them, Silmic leads are copper, if the magnet attracts they are fake

I'd just like to add that i have had two batches of counterfeit components from mouserin the last year so i wouldn't be surprised if those were conterfeit. The best thing to do i email mouser with your concerns and request a return. However, it is likely they will say that because you have opened the packet they cannot accept returns and they will pass you over to the technical department who will ask you to perform all manner of tests and even go as far as criticising your schematic. The best thing and the ting that worked for me was to contact the credit card company that you used to purchase the items.
good luck.
good luck.
I believe the Silmic IIs used to look like this pre-RoHS. They might not be fake, but just very old (10-15 years).
I saw a similar post a few years ago regarding Panasonic FCs which used to be a darker shade of blue and someone were wondering if they were fake.

I have tested: the magnet does NOT attract them. Could they belong to a limited serie with a different jacket from Elna ??
I have sent an email to Elna.co.jp asking if they are fake: maybe I will get a reply (?)

I have never got a single counterfeit part from Mouser over the past 12 years, but these do not come from mMouser: they come from a Chinese store...
I am surprised that a magnet does not attract them if they are counterfeit (!?)...

if they are 10-15 years old, these electrolytics will go directly into the bin !
Into the bin of the electronic components recycling center ?
We get some in Montpellier who collect old circuits pbc, machines etc.
Fresh capacitors from factory production line is the best no doubt.
I always buy from Mouser btw. 🙂 Best regards

Fresh new ones already ordered a few hours ago....from Mouser of course !Fresh capacitors from factory production line is the best no doubt.

I checked my collection and they all have a straight+bowed notch on top except those with small values of 10uf and 22uf.
So probably yours are genuine, especially since the leads are not magnetic.
You can check the dimensions if they match the datasheet.

I have known genuine silmic II from mouser in the 5mm diameter with a flat top. So lack of indented vent top is not indicative of fake. All silmics I have used were brown/white. The black and gold color, as well as the poor quality markings, would raise my suspicion. That said, I have also gotten plenty of genuine product from China. Wise to always test them, though, sometimes they are genuine buy out of spec.
They are marked 1918, so not an old date code, the case markings are very poor quality, no brown color
They smell like fakes

I have read somewhere that silmic 2 which are brown are made in Japan the others colors somewhere in Asia either Taiwan or China. Then the legs are thicker on silmic 0.8 mm but how thick they are on the smallest versions I have no idea.
But there are certainly counterfeits of silmic I myself have not encountered any even though I have had my suspicions that turned out to be wrong.
