Coral Flat 6 mkll monitors

Hi

I found a nice par of Coral Flat 6 mkll's for sale and I am thinking of buying them and turn them into a pair of monitors.

But I have a few questions before I make the jump..

First of all, are they any good? and is 180$ reasonable?

Second, I'd like to build monitors but I don't like the shape of the monitors on the drawing I've found

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Don't like the look of the monitor when the width is larger (or much larger) than the depth. I like a square top and the hight about 1.4 times the width. But I don't know if this is possible..

Also the rectangular bassreflexport is ugly, can this be replaced with a circular one?

And how would I calculate the dimensions?

Help is appreciated🙂

You ideally want the three internal dimensions to be of different lenghts, as to minimize resonances and spread them to different frequencies. Many people go with golden ratio sizes 0.618.

width or depth = Vb^(1/3)*0.618
width or depth = Vb^(1/3)
height = Vb^(1/3)*1.618

The square port can be changed to circular, just keep the same cross-sectional area. Use the following formula to find the diameter:

2*SQRT((height*width)/3.1415))

There might be a small difference in tuning between the two shapes, but I don't know enough to predict such a thing.

Coral Flats are one of the sweetest in Vocals, but I would pair them with Sonido Woofers- visualy a perfect match 🙂

thanks for the tip. But how would I design the boxes? Open? Closed? Bassreflex?

And what about crossover filters? I'm a newbie and thought fullrange speakers would be an easy start...

Do you mean the SCW 178-8 ? I can't find pictures or english info, but their fullrange sure looks nice😉

Instead of golden ratio could I use the square-root of 2 (like the paper size A format) or will there be toot much resonances?

I guess the measurements would be 20.2 x 28.4 x 40.2 cm to get 23 litres volume. I really like those proportions...

But a fullrange speaker with extra woofer... sounds very interesting to me but unfortunately I don't understand what they would look like. Is there anyware I can see examples?

SQRT(2) and it's reciprocal are my favorite numbers! 🙂

Should work fine IMHO.
