Hello my friend. What is the meaning of HT? You mean the old outdated wondercaps are nearly all bad? You would think that CJ tube gear would have long reliability. It seems that the PV series is still in demand.I thought the PS would be at fault but could fail in time as well. Thank you

Hello. It makes sense that audio preamps of 35 plus years need rebuild but i did not expect that from CJ. I still don't understand why it played at a low volume then the next day it distorted? It seems that the coupling caps and resistors wold be at fault. Could the PS also be at fault? What did they replace on yours. TY

Regardless of brand electrolytic capacitors dry out and become ineffective, even dangerous to the gear if they short rather than open. Resistors drift and parts like the relay simply wear out. I don't remember the exact replacement parts because mine were rebuilt a decade ago. I do remember power supply capacitors were replaced along with transistors in the regulated power supply and the relay was replaced on the PV5. That's all to be expected for 30 year old electronics.

Your car is old and wearing out. One day it runs OK. Next day it has lost pep. Day after that it coughs just to get rolling. Soon enough it won't run at all. Something (valves, rings, etc) is going bad, little by little, from good to poor to kaput.

Electronics do the same thing. CJ did not use junk parts but they couldn't get "forever" parts. All long-lived electronics (machines in general) need occasional replacements.
