Clipping

When a typical class-d amp is driven into clipping, does it's efficiency drop to below that of which a typical class-ab amp would exhibit driven to the same level of clipping? If so what mechanism causes this?

I have never seen any curve that shows a drop in efficiency.

Efficiency is even higher in clipping, I think, since output power is closer to input power
