If its an RIAA preamp then you are probably best posting the question over in the Analogue Line Level forum. This is for intros really.

If an opamp is an unknown then you can make a guess by checking the power supplies which will be on pins 4 and 7 for a single and pins 4 and 8 for dual opamp. RIAA stages probably use a low noise bipolar rather than FET device. Typically this would be an NE5532 which was the industry standard.
 
Trace out the pin out and make sure that you are not installing the replacement the wrong way around. Either that or it is oscillating. Standard duals have +Vs connected to pin 7 and -Vs to pin 4. I would check that first.

What op-amps have you tried so far?

Did you install sockets?
